In 2009 Vonae Tanner, a certified and experienced math teacher, began offering a hands-on math camp out of her front room. The camp was called MathMind Workshop. As the popularity of the camp grew it moved from her front room to a near-by trampoline park. Over time the camp expanded to include science, technology, engineering, and math and focused in on the STEM of trampolines specifically. The use of their curriculum bounced from the greater Atlanta area to several surrounding states. Now parks across the nation use MathMind Workshop courses to increase revenue by hosting STEM camps and field trips.
MathMind Workshop is a female-owned small business headquartered in Athens, Georgia, USA that creates trampoline-focused STEM curriculum. Their hands-on, project-based curriculum has been tried and tested in STEM field trips and STEM camps at trampoline parks across the nation for over ten years. They are the leader in helping students learn in an environment of playful innovation, creativity, and fun!
What is STEM, besides the trunk of a flower? STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math and was introduced in 2001 by the National Science Foundation. STEM champions the use of science and math to build, test, and analyze hands-on projects that solve real-world problems creating deeper learning through project-based applications.
How does STEM go with trampolines? Trampoline parks are chuck full of science. Trampolines use the forces of gravity and springs to convert kinetic energy into potential energy, and back again. These forces create changes in a jumper’s speed and motion. Why? It all goes back to our good friend Isaac Newton whose first law of motion states that an object will stay exactly as it is, without any change in its motion, unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force. But what are unbalanced forces, how does energy get converted from one form to another, and what makes a trampoline bouncy in the first place? All of these questions, and more, will be answered in a hands-on STEM activity coming soon to a trampoline park near you!
Do you want to host small groups of 10 - 15 kids such as school break camps, homeschool groups, or digital learning pods? Check out our STEM Starter Program.
Do you want to host large groups of 100 - 200 school students at a STEM field trip? Look into our STEM Suites Program.
The STEM Starter Program is for smaller, more casual groups. It's easy to implement and can be used independently by jumpers or with some guidance from a park employee. Materials are optional, courses are flexible.
The STEM Suites Program is used for large groups of 100 - 200 students who come to the park for a field trip. Each course is grade-specific and is aligned to national and/or state learning standards. All required materials come with the STEM Suite Program along with marketing, training, an implementation guide, a best-practices handbook, and live support.
Turn any event into a STEM event and add an upcharge of $5 - $10! Use the STEM Starter program to offer drop-off care for digital learners and their working parents, to host a STEM night, or to invite a homeschool group into the park. With 8 STEM events a week you can increase your revenue by several hundred dollars.
Adding a STEM day camp can generate a revenue of $3,000 - $10,000.
Field trips that fill empty morning hours can generate revenue from $10,000 - $20,000 per year. Host 2-hour field trips for 120 kids, at $12 - $15 per student. Parks average 5-8 field trips in their first year, 10 - 12 in their second year, and 15 - 20 in their third year.
The STEM Starter courses can be purchased individually at www.mathmindworkshop.com. They include a video and a printable activity sheet. Once purchased the video and activity sheet can be downloaded and shared with customers as they come in, or given to kids once they enter a designated STEM party room. If a park chooses to provide the materials listed at the end of the video, those can be purchased from any vendor before the beginning of the event. Some sample course topics include: Bouncing! Double Bouncing! and Swinging!
The STEM Suites Program can be licensed by contacting MathMind Workshop at 678-718-8068 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Courses include a digital lesson presentation for each grade K - 5, a worksheet, a hands-on engineering project and all materials. The courses are taugth by STEM coaches selected from park employees or hired by the park and STEM coach training is provided. The program includes a marketing package, an implementation guide, and live support. Materials are uniqely created for the STEM Suitse program and must be purchased through MathMind Workshop. There is a one-time licensing fee based on the number of party rooms available and there is an annual license renewal fee. The cost is small compared to the recurring revenue that will continue to grow each year!
